In 1964, Ronald Bell and his brother Robert “Kool” Bell joined fellow Jersey City pals to create a unique musical group known as the Jazziacs. The band went through a number of different monikers, The New Dimensions, The Soul Town Band and even Kool & The Flames, before settling on their current namesake. Over the next few years, the group jammed with the likes of Bill Cosby, Ritchie Havens and Richard Pryor, eventually refining their sound from purist jazz to modern electro-pop. In 1969, Kool & The Gang were signed by Gene Redd to De-Lite Records and the rest is history.
Throughout the past four decades, Kool & The Gang have sold more than 70 million albums worldwide. Their hits include many disco favorites, such as “Celebration,” “Ladies’ Night” and “Jungle Boogie.” If you’re still not convinced of their dominance, check out the hardware they’ve brought home: Two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, and 31 gold and platinum albums. Funk, Jazz and soul combine in the one group that is the most sampled band of all time.
To demonstrate how Kool & The Gang transcend generations and musical genres, the band’s hit “Jungle Boogie” was featured on the soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic film Pulp Fiction. Just last year, the group toured with Van Halen. In 2013, they’ll be performing alongside Kid Rock and Uncle Kracker in select shows across the U.S.
